Capel Iwan Archive 200410 and 11 - Survey Maps |
This is part of a series of web pages, assembled by Jim Batten, from files provided by Mr. Ieuan James.
It is based on a CD ROM, prepared by Capel Iwan PTA, to mark the retirement of Mr. James in 2004, and celebrate his twenty eight years as head teacher of Capel Iwan School.
Tne maps section has been extended to include links to some of the, now, widely available maps online.
Use this link to get back to the list of sections.
There is also a spreadsheet file (Capel Iwan Primary School History.xls) which is mainly to do with the school, but contains notes relating to some of the photos in this section. A summary of these notes being used in the file-name of each image, where possible.
The CD sleeve included the following note -
An acknowledgement must be made to the late Miss. Eilwen Jenkins, (a former teacher at both Parcylan and Capel Iwan schools) who initially assembled and annotated most of the older photos in 1988, and thanks to Mr. Iwan Jenkins for allowing her work to be used on the CD.
Maps - most of these link to zoomable versions of the maps Some require you to run Flash to view the maps |

1891 Tithe map with NLS 1888-1913 and a Tithe ledger of 15 October 1891 |
Welsh Tithe Maps held at The National Library of Wales Aberystwyth, showing field names with their owners and tenants |
When starting this, you see a satellite view overlaid with blue pointers relating to a tithe-apportionment dated 15th. October 1891. The green circles simply indicate that there are several entries close together and you will have to enlarge the view to separate them. There are a series of view options available on the right: "Modern" replaces the satellite view with a Google-type map. "NLS 1888-1913" replaces it with an old Survey map. "Tithe map overlay" shows the original map on which the blue tithe entries are based. Note that the NLS and Tithe maps are not exactly aligned with the modern views and lead to some discrepancies. The final control comes into place when you have the Tithe map visible. This is a slider which controls how transparent the Tithe map is. The "Help" option (at the top) is really helpfull - it also covers the search facility. |

As it stated on the CD, this ... is not, by any means, a "finished article", as it is hoped that future editions ... will include additional photos, memories, articles and research; which are invited for contribution by any member of the community.
Please eMail me any further links, images, and / or information which I will then try to include in the web pages.
